Introduction
I usually make a point to preview the upcoming workout DVDs that are being released over the Christmas and New Year period, but this year I noticed that there were fewer workout videos being released in the UK at this time, and a lot less enthusiasm for those that were being released.
Of course there was still a new release from Davina McCall, as there is every single year, and Ferne McCann released her own workout video that was fairly well received, but I think it is fair to say that fitness / workout DVDs are definitely starting to decline in popularity.
Here are some of the main reasons why I think people are losing interest in these workout videos:
Decline in DVD Purchases
The reality is that people just aren’t buying a lot of DVDs right now. We have moved into the digital age and people are consuming most of their content online, whether it’s fitness videos, TV shows or movies, for example.
DVD players are now really cheap, and the DVDs themselves are also getting a little cheaper, but people just aren’t buying them in the same numbers as they used to because they now seem kind of dated.
Online Workout Videos
Another reason why workout DVDs are becoming less and less popular is because it is now so easy to access some really effective fitness routines online without having to pay anything at all.
There are reported to be more than 30 million fitness videos on YouTube alone, all of which are free to watch, so there isn’t really any need to go out and buy a 60 or 90-minute workout DVD for £10-£15.
It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a chest, shoulder, arm, leg or back workout, or whether you are looking to lose weight with the help of a spin workout or an intense HIIT routine, for instance. You will find hundreds of videos online that will help you achieve your goals.
It is not just YouTube either because Instagram is also full of fitness trainers that have their own exercises and routines that many people can copy.
Celebrity Weight Loss Results
The final reason why many people are starting to lose interest in fitness DVDs is because some of the reality TV stars and celebrities who have released these products haven’t actually kept the weight off after their DVD went on sale, and in some cases didn’t even perform the same workouts that they were performing on their DVD.
This has resulted in many women in particular becoming a little bit sceptical about the weight loss claims and the before and after pictures that you see on the front covers, as well as the effectiveness of the actual workouts themselves.
Final Thoughts
When you take into account all of these factors, I think it is easy to see why the sales of these workout DVDs are in a steady decline, and this trend is surely only going to continue in the future.
People are now consuming all of their content online nowadays, and DVDs are starting to go the same way as CDs, cassettes and VHS tapes, so it is hard to believe that celebrities such as Davina McCall will still be producing these DVDs in 5 years time, for example.
I will finish by saying that this is probably a good thing for all fitness fanatics, bodybuilders and people who want to lose weight because YouTube has all of the workouts that you could possibly need. In addition, it also has videos from personal trainers that will help you get the most out of your training, and help you to perform exercises with correct form to avoid getting injured.
This content is free to watch and can be viewed anywhere on your laptop, tablet or phone, for example, so you can perform these routines anywhere, which is one more reason why using fitness DVDs seems like a dated concept.
