Google have recently revealed their Year in Search data for 2017, and as always, it makes for some interesting reading because you can instantly discover what people have been searching for the most on Google.
With regards to the health and fitness industry, it would appear that fewer people have been searching for indoor cycling and spinning-related terms because these don’t appear on the list at all, but CrossFit and HIIT workouts are still hugely popular based on this data.
In addition, it would seem that people are wanting to learn more about some of the hottest up and coming workouts because bungee, tabata, TRX and PiYo workouts all made the list, which would suggest that these workouts are just going to continue to grow in popularity in the coming years.
Here is the full list of the top 10 most searched exercises and workouts in 2017, according to Google:
1. Murph CrossFit Workout
Hero WODs (workouts of the day) are an important part of the CrossFit community because they are named after fallen heroes (firefighters, police officers, soldiers, etc) who lost their lives helping others in the line of duty. Subsequently, CrossFitters are motivated to perform these workouts with 100% effort and determination as a way of honoring them and paying their respects.
The Murph CrossFit workout is named after Michael Murphy, who died in Afghanistan aged just 29, because this routine was one of his favorites.
It consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and a final 1-mile run, so you will need both strength and stamina, and it can be performed in body armor or a 20-pound vest for the ultimate challenge.
2. Bungee Workout
More and more gyms are starting to offer bungee workout classes and they are all over Instagram right now, which explains why many people are starting to search for bungee workouts and related keywords online.
With these workouts, participants will strap themselves to bungee ropes that hang from the ceiling using a harness, so that they can then perform a range of different exercises, including squats, lunges and elevated push-ups, for instance.
3. Tabata Workout
Tabata workouts have been growing in popularity in recent years, and Google’s search trends from 2017 would suggest that they are now more popular than ever.
If you haven’t yet discovered these workouts before, they are essentially 4-minute HIIT workouts that are specifically designed to burn fat. Each exercise is 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off, which might not sound too difficult, but these short gut-busting routines will really push your body to the limit, particularly if you choose to do multiple 4-minute sets.
4. TRX Workout
TRX stands for Total Resistance eXercise, and it is a form of suspension training that has become very popular with both men and women because it enables you to train many different muscles with a variety of different bodyweight exercises using a simple piece of equipment.
By using a TRX Suspension Trainer, you can get a full-body workout that will increase strength and improve flexibility, and because gravity acts as resistance, you usually just need to adjust your body position in order to make each exercise easier or harder.
This form of exercise is now available in many gyms, and there are lots of these workouts available online for those people who are looking to get in shape. So when you consider that it also looks like a lot of fun, it is no surprise that many people are going online to search for tabata workout ideas.
5. Burpees Exercise
The burpee exercise has long been a favorite with personal trainers, and it would seem that many other people are keen to learn more about this particular bodyweight exercise based on the latest search data.
The good thing about the burpee is that you can work many different muscle groups and burn quite a few calories with this one simple move because it can include squats, leg thrusts, push-ups and a jump.
It is also fairly easy to perform because you just need to squat down, place your hands on the floor, kick your feet back, do a push-up (optional), thrust your feet up towards your chest and then jump us as high as you can to complete one rep.
6. HIIT Workout Routine
HIIT workouts are characterized by short but intense bursts of exercise combined with short rest periods, and although they have been one of the biggest fitness trends of the last 5-10 years, they appear to be just as popular in 2017.
The reason why is because high intensity interval training routines have been proven to be very effective at burning fat, and as a result of this, there are now thousands of these HIIT routines on YouTube and Pinterest, for example.
So they are not difficult to find online, and the good thing about HIIT is that you can adopt this style of training when performing any kind of workout, whether you are doing bodyweight exercises at home, or whether you are using a rowing machine, exercise bike, treadmill or elliptical, for instance.
7. PiYo Workout
A lot of people are huge fans of pilates and yoga, but PiYo combines the two (hence the name) to give you the muscle-toning effects of pilates along with the flexibility of yoga, whilst also increasing the intensity to help you burn more fat.
PiYo was developed by Beachbody, the same company who created the highly effective Insanity workout, and the major benefit of these PiYo workouts is that you can achieve the same kind of results without placing a lot of strain on your joints and muscles.
8. Inner Thigh Workout
It is strange to discover that a lot of people have been searching for inner thigh workouts this year because it is generally a better idea to do a complete leg workout that works all of your leg muscles (as well as your glutes) instead of one that just focuses on one specific area.
Nevertheless it is understandable because many women in particular are unhappy with their inner thighs and may even be experiencing some chaffing issues when they are walking around, whilst others simply don’t feel confident wearing a short pair of shorts in the gym or on the beach, for example.
Whatever the reasons, there are plenty of inner thigh workouts available on YouTube for those people who are looking for a possible solution.
9. 17.2 Workout
The 17.2 workout was one of the Open workouts from the 2017 CrossFit Games, and as it was one of the most searched for workouts this year, it was obviously the one that attracted the most interest.
As with most CrossFit routines, this is a particularly punishing routine because you are supposed to do 2 rounds of 50-ft weighted walking lunges, 16 toes-to-bars and 8 power cleans, followed by 2 rounds of 50-ft weighted walking lunges, 16 bar muscle-ups and 8 power cleans, and continue to do these on rotation to see how many rounds you can complete in 12 minutes.
10. Oblique Workout
There are literally thousands of abs workouts online that will help you to develop six-pack abs, but not of them will help you to develop your obliques, which are the often neglected muscles that run down the side of your body.
Therefore it is probably not surprising that many people are going online to try to find some routines that will develop these muscles.
