The pull-up is undoubtedly one of the most physically demanding bodyweight exercises because you will often see people in the gym struggling to complete a single rep, but it is certainly one of the most effective if you are looking to develop your upper body.
That’s because as well as strengthening your core muscles, it will also work your arms, shoulders and back to give you a lot more strength and power, and a lot more muscle definition.
The only drawback is that many people will never get to do this highly effective compound exercise because they are not a member of a gym.
Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to discuss 4 ways you can do pull-ups without having to join a gym.
Use A Tree
One of the easiest ways to do pull-ups is to search around in your local area for a suitable tree that you can use to perform this exercise. You just need to make sure that the branches are strong enough to support your weight.
The good thing about doing pull-ups on a tree instead of in the gym is that you will be forced to use different grips, and will be able to work different muscle groups, as demonstrated here:
Use The Bars At Your Local School / Park
Another free method that will cost you absolutely nothing is to use the bars in your local school or park. These parallel bars are commonly found in many residential areas, and are always fairly popular with the local residents because they can be used to perform pull-ups, chin-ups and dips.
The benefit here is that these bars are secured anchored to the ground with concrete so that both children and adults can use them.
Buy A Pull-Up Bar For Your Home
There was a time when you could only really use a pull-up bar in your local gym, but nowadays there are pull-up bars that are specifically designed to be used at home, such as this workout bar from Iron Gym, for example.
So instead of having to join a gym, you can now pay as little as $20-$30 for a pull-up bar that will fit between your doorway at home to enable you to perform the same kind of exercises.
These may seem slightly dangerous at first glance, but you will find that they are surprisingly strong and stable, and they will obviously have passed numerous safety checks to ensure that they will support people’s weight without any risk of injury.
Construct Your Own Pull-Up Bar
The final option is to simply construct your own pull-up bar in your back yard or garden. I have to admit that this idea doesn’t really appeal to me at all because I am not a DIY expert, but you could easily hire someone to build one for you if you don’t want to do it yourself.
Having watched a few videos, it doesn’t look too difficult. You just need to ensure that the frames are strongly rooted into the ground so that there is no movement whatsoever, and that the bar is completely level to the ground and doesn’t move around at all.
Here is a video that describes the whole process:
